In the Studio: Giovanni's Room

I'm working on an installation based on the 1956 James Baldwin novel, Giovanni's Room. My version of Giovanni's Room will be uniquely contemporary, corporate, and odd. In the novel's conclusion Giovanni is accused of murdering a wealthy and flamboyant bar owner. My installation takes place right after the police have come to take Giovanni. My staging of Giovanni's Room draws from the language of window displays. Today I started installing a printed wall pattern for the piece.

In the Studio: Test Video Screen Shots

I'm developing a video piece relating to sexy violence applied to a queer aesthetic. The piece has emerged from drawings, embroideries, and objects I constructed over the last two months. I've made a lot of screen tests and am working on pulling out some shorter sequences. Here are screen shots from my first cuts.

Openings: SAIC MFA Open Studio Night Wrap-Up

Open Studio was fantastic. I had a chance to see work by many of my colleagues. Guests to my studio space were treated to gay porn or pink buttons (they went fast). I'm posting a few highlights from my tour of the other departments. There are more pictures and information on the pieces below on my Flickr page.
